How the hell did the Grand Am get worse gas mileage than the Grand Prix and the same as a Bonneville? It was so much smaller...

Bizarre final drive choices for a more “sporty” feel? I don’t know. I’d have expected that on the Prix, not the Am.

Prix and Bonny got the 3.8 Buick.

Well, yeah. But I never though of that engine to be particularly spectacular gas mileage wise, unless the Grand Am got a really bad engine.

I believe it may be a case of, small engine that’s overworked doesn’t get better gas mileage than moderate sized engine that can relax.

Could be transmission/gearing, too.

That 3.4 was a dog of an engine from the 70s, and didn’t have the decades of development that the buick six did. Also, torque. The 3.8 made over 200 lb-ft at a low RPM. The 3.4 had to spin a bit faster to produce its twist and maintain speed. So gearing has a good bit to do with it I guess.
